Our Beginnings

The history of Schmidt & Schulta Funeral Home began in 1975 when David A. Schmidt and Michael A. Schulta became business partners. Together they purchased the Kopitzke-Staus Funeral Home in Birnamwood from Ralph Staus and the Schmidt Funeral Home in Wittenberg from Anita Schmidt, the wife of the late Roger O. Schmidt and David A. Schmidt's mother.

Together David and Michael owned and operated the funeral homes along with a furniture store located in Wittenberg. In 1989 they closed the furniture store. This left them to devote all of their time to the funeral business.

In April of 1996, Michael A. Schulta died in an auto accident.

David B. "Benji" Schmidt joined his father in March of 1997.

In May of 2006, Andrea J. Schmidt and her husband moved to Birnamwood to join her father and brother.

Together they work hard to give families everything they need to create a loving tribute for their loved one.

Birnamwood

It began in 1935 when the Kopitzke Funeral Home located to Birnamwood. It started in a small building next door to the Lyons Meat Market downtown.

In 1938, A. J. Kopitzke purchased the B.B. Andrews home (the current location of the funeral home). A. J. Kopitzke remodeled the rooms, but, left the beautiful woodwork intact. He opened the doors to the updated funeral home in 1940. In 1949, his son, Ronald Kopitzke joined the firm and worked side by side with his father. A.J. Kopitzke was an expert in his profession and a popular citizen. He died suddenly in December of 1964. Ronald Kopitzke continued the funeral business until 1969, when he sold the funeral home to Ralph Staus. The funeral home name was changed to Kopitzke-Staus Funeral Home.

In the year of 1975, Kopitzke-Staus Funeral Home was purchased by David A. Schmidt and the late Michael A. Schulta. The funeral home once again had new owners and again a new name, Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home.

Wittenberg

The history for the Wittenberg funeral home/ambulance service began in the early 1900's with it's founder, Mr. George Smith. The funeral home was later handed down to his son, Mr. Albert Smith who operated the funeral home into the 1960's. From then it was purchased by Mr. Roger O. Schmidt. Not only did he operate the funeral home and the ambulance service, he also operated a furniture store. It was located in a store front building on Webb Street in downtown Wittenberg. In 1973, David A. Schmidt joined his father. One year later, Roger O. Schmidt died unexpectedly.

Thus, Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home was started. This was brought about by the purchase of the Wittenberg funeral home and the Birnamwood funeral home by David A. Schmidt and the late Michael A. Schulta. They continued the funeral homes and furniture store business.

In 1983, a new facility was built on College Ave for the Wittenberg funeral home. This left much needed space for the furniture store and a gift shop was added. They continued to operate the furniture store and gift shop until 1989. With the closing of the furniture store and gift shop, this helped them to put all of their time and energy into the funeral business.
