Obituary for Jerome Theodore Topczewski

Jerome "Jerry" T. Topczewski, 70, Hatley, died unexpectedly Friday, November 25, 2005 at the home of his daughter, Roxanne Wanta.
He was born December 27, 1934 in the township of Reid, Marathon County, the son of the late Victor and Caroline (Stachyra) Topczewski.
Jerry was a US Marine Veteran serving during the Korean War. He was a member of the Ringle-Hatley VFW Memorial Post #8342 where he was currently the commander and was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans.
On January 28, 1956, Jerry was united in marriage to Theresa "Terry" Glatczak at St. Ladislaus Catholic Church, Bevent. She survives.
Jerry worked at Marathon Electric, Wausau and Radtke GMC, Schofield. The couple farmed in the town of Reid until 1964 when they purchased a tavern currently known as Jerry & Terry's Tavern in Hatley. From 1981-1992, Jerry was a town of Reid Chairman. Up until his passing, Jerry was a self-employed excavator. Jerry was also a member of St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley and enjoyed playing cards, hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends especially his grandchildren. He was known especially for his words of wisdom, always ready for a good debate.
In addition to his wife, Terry, survivors include four children; Jerome (Carol) Topczewski Jr., Roxanne (Randy) Wanta, Brenda (Dave Sparr) Bembenek and Timothy Topczewski, all of Hatley; five grandchildren, Rebecca and Ryan Wanta, Matthew and Jennifer Topczewski and Tiffany Bembenek; one sister, Louise (John) Grys, Fairbanks, Alaska; and many nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents, two brothers, Leonard and Daniel, preceded Jerry in death.
The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11:00 am, Thursday, December 1, 2005 at St. Florian Catholic Church, Hatley. Rev. Thomas Abraham will officiate. Interment will be in the parish cemetery. Pallbearers will be Clay Falkowski, Chris Falkowski, Brandon Fraaza, Dustin Fraaza, Dean Meverden, Wayne Merkovich, Steve Merkovich and Allen Krueger. Friends may call on Wednesday from 4:00 pm, with prayer service following at 8:00 pm and again on Thursday from 10:00 am until the time of service all at the church. The Bloecher Johnson American Legion Post #502 will conduct military rites. Schmidt-Schulta Funeral Home, Wittenberg is assisting the family with funeral arrangements. Online condolences available at
